Agrippina Crowns Nero

Agrippina Crowns Nero

Aphrodisias

Discussed on pp. 206–7

Agrippina II crowning Nero her young son with a laurel wreath. She carries a cornucopia, symbol of Fortune and Plenty. He wears armour and the cloak of a Roman commander with a helmet on the ground at his feet. The scene portrays Nero’s accession as emperor in November 54, and was sculptured well before AD 59 when he had his mother murdered.
